10 Lessons that have truly stuck with me as a professional female voiceover artist.

Four years, hundreds of clients, and more lessons than I can count...

Here are the 10 that have truly stuck with me as a professional female voiceover artist.

Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been behind the mic for years, these are the lessons that have shaped my journey as a British voiceover and live event Voice of God.

1. Double up on pronunciation, just in case.

Even if the producer gives the green light, if I’m unsure of a pronunciation or an acronym and the client isn’t on the line, I always record both versions. It saves time and protects relationships.

2. Always get the PO number BEFORE the session!

Chasing paperwork after the fact is a pain. Lock it in beforehand, and future-you will thank you.

3. Let go of the fantasy of being paid on time.

My payment terms? Mostly decorative. I’ve made peace with the fact that cash flow will always be lumpy, and that I will (eventually) be paid.

4. Silence can mean satisfaction.

If you deliver a job and hear nothing back, don’t panic. In this business, no feedback is often good news.

5. The ‘small jobs’ often lead to the biggest gigs.

The £150 scratch read might lead to the £5,000 global campaign or huge live awards ceremony. Treat every client like they’re your biggest client, because one day, they might be.

6. You’re not just a voice, you’re a service.

Being a professional female voiceover artist and British Voice of God isn’t just about sounding great. Fast responses, clean files, and a smooth, stress-free experience matter just as much.

7. Gear matters, but your ears matter more.

A top-tier mic won’t fix a poorly treated space. I’ve learned how to really hear what’s being recorded in my booth, and that’s been a game changer.

8. You’re allowed to say no.

Not every script is a fit. Not every rate is worth it. You can be polite and professional, and still set boundaries.

9. Keep marketing, even when you’re busy.

Don’t go quiet when you’re booked out. Staying visible keeps the pipeline warm and the work flowing.

10. You’ll grow more from the “no’s” than the “yes's.”

Rejection builds resilience. And every “no” teaches me something I bring to the next “yes.”
